Campus Web Accessibility Keeps Climbing: Average Siteimprove Score Holds at 93.1, College of Public Health Hits 100
Wednesday, July 23, 2025

Iowa’s push for digital accessibility continues to deliver results—thanks to the commitment of web owners, IT partners, and content creators across campus.

Inventories: Final Call

If you haven’t yet submitted your website inventory to the Accessibility Task Force, now is the time. Most units have already coordinated submissions through their IT partners, but a quick double‑check ensures nothing slips through the cracks.

Campus Metrics at a Glance

  • 1,656 university websites are scanned weekly in Siteimprove.  If your site isn’t being scanned, visit our Siteimprove page to set this up.
  • The average accessibility score is 93.1— we have multiple weeks above 93 as we work to averaging a score a target score of 94.  Eventually, we strive to maintain our sites averaging scores of 100.
  • PDF accessibility remains a significant hurdle. Roughly 30,000 PDFs are still flagged as inaccessible, but we saw a modest win this week with 500 fewer inaccessible PDFs than last week.  We ask everyone to continue to Remove, Revise, and Right First our visible PDF files online.

What you can do:

  1. Know your Siteimprove score for your website and what needs to be done to maintain a score of 94 and work to a score of 100. (also, make sure your site is in Siteimprove!)
  2. Know how many PDFs on your pages need remediation.
  3. Build a clean‑up plan or reach out for support. Our team can help them prioritize high‑impact documents and point to remediation tools.  For further guidance, check out this article.

See the Progress Live

We showcase scores, fixes, and upcoming work every Thursday at Sprint Demos (1 p.m.). All campus partners are welcome. Find the agenda and Zoom link each Thursday morning on the Web Community Updates page.

Kudos Corner

A round of applause for Patrick Riepe and the College of Public Health—the first unit at Iowa to earn a perfect 100 Siteimprove accessibility score. Their achievement sets the bar for what’s possible when accessibility is woven into every step of site governance.

Our collective progress proves that accessibility isn’t a one‑time project—it’s a campus‑wide habit. Let’s keep the momentum going: verify your inventories, chip away at those PDFs, and join us on Thursdays to celebrate wins and tackle challenges together.
